Migraines Steal Enough Days Already.

Here's Where Light Therapy Genuinely Fits In, and Where It Doesn't

If you live with migraines, you've probably already tried more things than most people will ever need to. Medication, trigger tracking, dark rooms, ice packs, giving up caffeine and then going back to it. So we want to be straightforward with you about where Hyperlight Therapy genuinely fits into that picture — and where it doesn't.

Let's Be Honest About the Research First

There's real, interesting research on light and migraines. A University of Arizona clinical trial found that exposure to narrowband green light for one to two hours daily reduced headache pain by around 60 percent and significantly reduced migraine frequency in study participants. That's genuinely promising research, but it's important to understand exactly what it studied: a very specific green wavelength, viewed directly with the eyes in a dim room, not light applied to the skin.

In fact, the same body of migraine research has found the opposite effect with other light: white, red, amber, and especially blue wavelengths have been found to trigger headache pain in people with migraine. This is exactly why we're not going to tell you that general light therapy, including Hyperlight Therapy's broad-spectrum light, is a direct migraine cure. That claim wouldn't be honest, and if you have photophobia during an attack, the wrong kind of light exposure could genuinely make things worse.

Where Hyperlight Therapy Actually Fits

What Hyperlight Therapy is used for is something different, but genuinely relevant for many migraine sufferers: the muscle tension in your neck, shoulders, and upper back that frequently contributes to headache frequency and intensity.

For a lot of people, migraines aren't purely a standalone neurological event, they're worsened or triggered by cervicogenic factors (tension originating in the neck), tight shoulders from stress or poor posture, and general muscular tension that compounds over time. This is a well-established area of light-based therapy research, distinct from the ocular green-light studies:

Topical light therapy has research support for neck-related pain and tension, with systematic reviews finding low-level laser therapy effective in the management of neck pain, directly relevant to the cervicogenic component of many people's migraines.

Localised, non-ocular applications are an active area of migraine research, including clinical trials investigating low-level laser therapy applied to specific areas as a preventive treatment approach for reducing migraine frequency, duration, and associated disability.

Applied to the neck and shoulders, never to the eyes, and never during an active attack, this is a genuinely different (and safer) proposition than shining bright light at someone mid-migraine.

Who This Is (and Isn't) For

This may be worth exploring if:

  • Your migraines are frequently preceded or accompanied by neck and shoulder tension

  • You're looking for a between-attacks, preventive-style addition to your management plan, not an acute treatment

  • You already manage stress-related muscle tension and want a non-invasive option to add to that

  • You're under the care of a doctor for your migraines and want to discuss adding a complementary, non-drug approach

This is not appropriate:

  • As treatment during an active migraine attack, especially if you're experiencing photophobia

  • As a replacement for prescribed migraine medication or your neurologist's management plan

  • As a guaranteed fix, migraine is a complex neurological condition, and individual triggers and responses vary enormously

What a Session Involves

Gentle, targeted, and always with your specific triggers and sensitivities in mind:

  1. A detailed consultation about your migraine pattern, triggers, and whether neck/shoulder tension is a factor for you.

  2. Light applied to the neck, shoulders, or upper back, never directly to the eyes, for 10–20 minutes.

  3. Sessions scheduled between attacks, as a preventive-style addition, not during an active migraine.

  4. A tailored plan, adjusted based on how your headache frequency and tension respond over several weeks.

If your migraines are frequent, severe, or you haven't had them properly assessed by a doctor, we'd genuinely encourage that conversation alongside anything we do here, this works best as one part of a broader management plan, not a stand-alone solution.

Complementary Support, Honestly Explained

We'd rather tell you clearly what this can and can't do than oversell it. If the tension side of your migraines sounds familiar, it's worth a conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Light Therapy and Migraines

Does Hyperlight Therapy cure migraines? No, and we wouldn't want to claim that. Migraine is a complex neurological condition. What Hyperlight Therapy may support is the neck and shoulder muscle tension that contributes to headache frequency for many people — as one part of a broader management approach, not a stand-alone cure.

Isn't light supposed to trigger migraines, not help them? For many people during an active migraine, yes, bright or certain-coloured light exposure can worsen photophobia and pain. That's exactly why sessions are applied to the neck and shoulders rather than the eyes, and scheduled between attacks rather than during one.

Should I try this instead of my migraine medication? No, please don't stop or change prescribed medication without your doctor's guidance. This is intended as a complementary addition alongside your existing care.

How would I know if neck tension is part of my migraines? Your practitioner will talk through your specific pattern at consultation, that said, this is also worth raising with your GP or neurologist as part of understanding your overall migraine triggers.

How many sessions before I'd notice a difference? This varies significantly by individual and by how much of a role tension plays in your specific migraines. Your practitioner will discuss a realistic timeline based on your consultation.
